The West 3rd Street, Dover, location of our architectural salvage shop, Olde House Parts, is no longer open for business. Lease terms changed on May 1st, and, while we received many encouraging words from those who came to shop, six months was not enough time for the shop to catch on to a level that would enable us to pay the rent. The concept is not dead, though, and the spirit of the store will live on.OldeHouseParts-TR20101103
Olde House Parts, an architectural salvage store, will open its doors from 9 to 2 Saturday at 123 W. 3rd St. where volunteers from the Tuscarawas County Heritage Home Assn. will serve as the staff. The site is in Suite 101 of the Galleria.
Focal point of the items are exactly what the store is titled: old house parts, primarily fixtures.
“We have brackets from an old livery and saddlery, a historic sign, vintage hardware, doors, plumbing, lighting, stairways, doorknobs, windows, latches, cabinet pulls, shutter hinges, gaslight fixtures, heating grates...” said George Laurence, a member of the HHA. “We accept donations only, but sell to any interested individuals or corporations.”
A value is assigned to the item and all items are priced, Laurence explained. Many of the items have come from local homes or auctions and there are several items from the former Dover Elks building dismantled at 215 N. Wooster Ave., including a stairway and banister.
“Everything is as is,” Laurence explained. “We’re not in the business of restoring, but we’ll clean off excess rust and scale. We don’t sell electrical items because of the liability issue.”
The target era of items is between 1890 and 1920, with donations from no later than the Korean War era (early 1950s) accepted, according to Laurence.
In addition to Saturdays, Olde House Parts will be open Wednesdays from 4 to 9.
